Social Dressmaking. collaboration : the Cooperativa de Arte e Costura off Cidade de deus .
The Cooperativa de Arte e Costura makes its own opportunities independently. This premise leads to a collaboration using an artistic dimension as an incision in the local fabric, creating actions and productions that show the creation process of a collective architecture. They are positioned at the binomial resulting from transactions of hospitality-cooperation, network-social responsibility as an act of resistance. Social dressmaking: My invitation to the cooperative was intended to recuperate the imagery of carnival that they are so familiar with, with an updating of its origin as a protest tool. That is how our proposal of social dressmaking arose, based on sewing and repairing a fabric, reinventing conditions and situations. It is a question of “sewing” bonds: how the cooperative was set up, to exercise and create a network. We began to work together starting with the concept of tacking: designing or planning something with a central strand of thread on the fabric as a guideline for the garment that would appear later and disappear in the end. We used the symbolic and the poetic as an intrusion into reality that demonstrates how we can reinvent it, using recycling, the result of social waste (publicity, plastic, shopping bags, leaflets) to recreate actions, installations, pieces, carnival costumes, portable objects, all derived from common symbolic items in Brazilian society and local social situations.

La Cooperativa produce en Rio de Janeiro sus propias oportunidades autónomamente. Desde esta premisa partieron hacia una colaboración utilizando una dimensión artística como incisión en el tejido local, realizando acciones y producciones que mostraran el proceso de creación de una arquitectura colectiva. Posicionadas en los binomios resultantes de las transacciones de hospitalidad-cooperación, red-responsabilidad social como práctica de resistencia.
La costura social es unir y reparar un tejido reinventando las condiciones y las situaciones. Es coser los vínculos: como se configuró la propia cooperativa, para ejercitar y crear red. Realizamos un proceso dirigido desde este concepto de costura y una recuperación del sentido originario del auténtico Carnaval en Río de Janeiro, en sus orígenes de corte reivindicativo pero devorado por lo espectacular en la actualidad. La orientación del taller era transitar una experiencia creativa construyendo ropas de carnaval donde poder lucir los mensajes que se quisieran lanzar. Las piezas y artefactos producidos a lo largo del taller se realizaron desde medios de fácil uso, con técnicas propias de la Cooperativa de Arte e Costura como la utilización habitual del reciclaje desplazándose a utilizar el resultado del desecho social: publicidades, plásticos, bolsas de la compra, folletos, etc. El final del taller fue un pasacalle-carnaval, como el primero que realizamos en la comunidad de Cidade de Deus.
